Wondering how to keep bed bugs out of the bedroom? There are plenty of ways, actually. You could use bug sprays or bug bombs or, of course, throw away any mattresses that are infested with bed bugs. However, certain scents provide a natural and easy way to keep bed bugs away in the first place.
Read on for some common scents to keep the bed bugs away.
One scent that keeps away bed bugs and smells great is blood orange. The smell is a bit more acidic than the scent of normal oranges. By simply putting a few drops of blood orange essential oil in a diffuser and leaving it on overnight, you could ensure the bed bugs stay out of your room.
Another great way of spreading the blood orange scent is by placing a few drops of the essential oil in a spray bottle with water, then spraying the mixture all around your room.
Be sure to keep your pets and children away from any areas you’ve sprayed with the essential oil mixture. While these oils are made naturally, they aren’t safe for consumption. The case is the same with most essential oils.
If you aren’t a fan of the scent of blood oranges, consider peppermint essential oil. Peppermint is another pleasant scent that keeps bed bugs away. Pests that are already in your room will likely leave after spraying a peppermint essential oil solution, as they despise the scent. The best way to keep the bed bugs away with a peppermint scent is by spraying an essential oil mixture on your headboards and mattresses.
Another way to keep the bed bugs out of your bedroom is by using simple rubbing alcohol. Spraying your bed with rubbing alcohol will even kill a huge portion of bed bugs. Any that weren’t killed by the alcohol will leave because of the scent. Even better, rubbing alcohol usually prevents bed bugs from laying any more eggs. Just be careful when spraying rubbing alcohol, as it’s a flammable substance.
Tea tree oil
Tea tree oil is another product you can mix with water to prevent bed bugs. Tea tree oil can cause damage to bed bug exoskeletons, though the scent itself is usually enough to keep them away.
There are plenty of scents you can use to keep bed bugs out of your room, including lavender, spearmint, cinnamon and lemon. In addition to using scents, be sure to also keep your mattress clean.
Now that you know how to keep bed bugs out of the bedroom, start prepping your mattress. If you do end up with bed bugs, contact a reputable, local exterminator to see what they recommend. Sometimes an exterminator may recommend getting rid of your mattress completely.
